Composer: Burns, Michael

Publisher: TrevCo

Edition: 1369

for reed quintet: oboe, alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, and bassoon
by Michael J. Burn (b. 1963)- New Zealand composer and bassoonist
I. Waltz
II. Shuffle
Riffs is a two-movement work in the style of a Jazz Waltz and a Jazz Shuffle. It was written in response to a request from a bassoon colleague, Will Dietz, for a sort of "jazz primer" for bassoon with written-out solos in the style of improvisation. All of the parts are written out, but improvisation is encouraged. Scored for the somewhat unique instrumentation of Oboe, Alto Sax, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, and Bassoon, this is a re-working of Michael's popular Riffs for flute (or clarinet), bassoon, and piano, TCO 1356.
