Oblique Strategies (score & parts) - OB/CL/BSN
Composer: Sternfeld-Dunn, Aleksander
for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon
by Aleksander Sternfeld-Dunn (b. 1980)- American composer and teacher
From the composer:
Oblique Strategies is written for the PEN Trio and is based upon the aphorism cards of the same name by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt. Each variation was created by pulling a different card from the deck and then following the written instruction on the card. Some variations are clear representations of the instructions while others are more abstract. In addition to the variation nature of this work, the clarinet also serves as the main protagonist of the work. My former composition teacher Charles Argersinger, a clarinetist himself, passed away after a long battle with Parkinson's around the time I began work on this pieces. In a way this pieces serves a second purpose as an homage to Charles.
This work has been recorded by the PEN Trio on their debut album, Found Objects: New Music for Reed Trio.
