Doubles (1993)
for oboe and piano
by Judith Lang Zaimont (b. 1945) - American composer

Doubles for oboe and piano is an oboe-piano 'duo' written in 1993. This work is a single movement in three sections. While the outer sections feature overt, technically challenging energetic material, the inner section is more introspective and built from lyric fragments. The entire movement evolves in an increasingly tonal direction, building organically on the strongly rhythmic motive heard in the opening measures.
Written as a display piece, Doubles owes its title to several features of two-ness within the work, in addition to being a piece for two players; emphasis on double notes, duple divisions of the beat, the predominance of parallel phrase structure, and immediate repetitions (with some variation) of all primary musical statements.
Doubles was commissioned by Lisa Kozenko, through a support grant from the Minnesota Composers Forum with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation, and is dedicated to oboist Robert Bloom.
A review of a compact disc recording of the work states 'It is a dazzling virtuosic showpiece that not only impresses the listener, but is also quite enjoyable on a first hearing.' Doubles was selected as one of the top 100 pieces written in the twentieth century in Chamber Music America's 'The Century List.'
