The first version of this piece dates back to 1970. Three years later, I revised a number of details as well as the overall structure. The sequence of episodes designated with the letters ABCDE must not be changed. These sections, which are interspersed with progressions and different characteristics, correspond to five main sections of a "distance" extending from the initial low b-flat to the concluding low b-flat.
