Plaisir d'amour

for bassoon and piano

by Jean-Paul Martini

Arranged by Eric Varner

This popular chanson was originally arranged for bassoon and piano by the late Eric Varner, to whom this edition is dedicated. Eric Van der Veer Varner was 45 when he died of an apparent heart attack (Oct. 4, 2019) in Bangkok, Thailand, while on tour giving concerts and master classes with the PEN Woodwind Trio. Eric was a true polymath — world-class musician, devoted professor and mentor to dozens of young bassoonists, successful business owner, and even farmer. He was an extraordinarily kind and generous man. He was engaged to be married to Evelyn Hesslink a few months following his return from the tour. I will always believe that Eric originally arranged this chanson as a love song to Evelyn, and so, with this edition, the arranger dedicates this musical expression of love to Eric on behalf of all of those who knew him and loved him.
