Suite, op. 40
for bassoon and continuo (piano)
by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755) - French Baroque composer
I. Rondeau
II. Gigue
III. Paysane
IV. Rondeau
V. Gavotte
VI. Menuet I
VII. Menuet II
Edited and realized by William Kaplan. Boismortier issued these pieces in the year 1732 in Paris under the title Suite de pieces qu'on peut jouer seul; since he included them in a publication also containing six sonatas for either two bassoons two celli, or two viols, it appears that he regarded any of those instruments as also appropriate for performing the suite. Nonetheless, the music is particularly idiomatic and graceful for bassoon, and the title page attests to its relative lack of difficulty; the pieces, in Boismortier's words, "peuvent se jouer...facilement".
