Paraphrase is a based on a song attributed to Henry VIII: "Pastime With Good Company". Two main ideas are derived from it: a rhythmic ostinato overlaid by an improvisation on a melody which alludes to the old technique of divisions or melodic variations. The music moves towards a brief quotation of the original theme then away progressively fragmenting.
