Nocturne, op. 87
for bassoon and piano
by Christian Franz Ludwig Friedrich Alexander Rummel (1787-1849) - German composer, conductor and pianist
Known mostly for his piano and occasional wind compositions, Rummel’s Nocturne , op. 87 was originally written for Horn or Basset Horn and Piano. The original key was F Major. With this edition it is adapted for Bassoon and Piano with a key adjustment to C Major.
Unlike Rummel’s Variations for Piano and Bassoon or his Trio Concertante for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Piano, (also published by TrevCo Music Publishing), this brief Nocturne offers a calmer respite from the bravura of the other two pieces.
Nonetheless, it is a welcome addition to the repertoire of the early 19th Century. Although one might consider Rummel to be a contemporary of Beethoven (born 17 years later and died 22 years after Beethoven, sharing 40 years in common), the style of the Nocturne is certainly more of a late Classical and early Romantic idiom.
