Suite on Airs of Henry Purcell
for oboe and string quartet
by Mary Chandler (1911-1996)-English composer

I. Adagio-Allegro-Adagio If Music Be the Food of Love from Don Quixote
II. Allegro Ah, How Sweet it is to Love
III. Lento- The Cares of Lovers from Timon of Athens
IV. Allegro I'll Sail Upon the Dog-star from The Fool's Preferment
V. Presto ma non troppo Then Prithee Aminta, Consent and be Kind

Arranged in the 1950s, the music for this Suite comes from Orpheus Britannicus, a collection of Purcell's songs published in 1698, three years after his death. The four movements of the Suite keep very closely to the vocal line and figured bass of the original vocal lines.
