A Short Walk on the Downs (1994)
for oboe and piano
by Philip Hansell (b. 1962)- British composer

A Short Walk on the Downs is a recollection in music of a walk the composer took late one summer afternoon on the South Downs in West Sussex. A long melody, with its hints of birdsong, celebrates the discovery of an unspoiled rural corner, while folk-like ostinati represent the sustained effort of climbing steep downland. The eventual return is depicted, in the oboe and piano version, by the five o'clock striking of a church bell.
