Nocturne
for English horn and piano
I. Intrada
II. Toccata
III. Elegy

by Gilbert Porsch - American composer
edited by Trevor Johnson

Trevor Johnson, a member of the Louisville Orchestra since 1995, serves as Assistant Principal Oboe and English horn. He is originally from Bettendorf, Iowa and Camden, Maine.

Mr. Johnson believes the most interesting aspect of being an orchestra musician is the “changing repertoire and visiting artists” and he especially enjoys playing and listening to music of Samuel Barber, Johannes Brahms, and Antonin Dvorak.

One of his favorite pieces for English horn and piano is the beautiful Nocturne by Gilbert W. Porsch. Almost lost, this little gem from 1940 has been revived and edited by Mr. Johnson in a new engraving, which is now published by TrevCo Music Publishing. He presents this in memory of Mark Weiger, who introduced him to the piece.

Unfortunately, research has provided little insight into the composer’s life, aside from graduating from Oberlin College and teaching in Concord, New Hampshire.
