Paladilhe entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of nine and in 1857 was awarded the first prize in piano. Three years later in 1860, he received the first prize in organ at the Paris Conservatory, and that same year he won the Prix de Rome for his cantata Le Czar Ivan IV.

Paladilhe wrote several works for the "Opera Comique", as well as sacred works, songs and orchestral compositions. His opera, Patrie was his most successful work. In January 1881, Paladilhe was decorated by the Legion of Honour, and in 1892 he succeeded Guiraud as member of the Institut de France. He died on January 8, 1926 in Paris.

Paladilhe's Solo de Concert (or Concertante) was chosen for the Paris Conservatoire Concours in 1898, 1906 and 1914. It is one of the best known of this genre for the oboe. 

This edition is one of the Jeanne Master Class Series. It includes extensive interpretation suggestions by Valarie Anderson.
