The Countryside Is My Home-OB/PN
Composer: Ilin & Zhiwei
Publisher: Nova (England)
for oboe and piano
by Sun Ilin & Wang Zhiwei
This piece was given to me by a student at the Nanning Academy of Arts in the south western province of Guangxi China, during a tour of the People's Republic in 1981.
Its subtitle is "to young intellectuals who have done to the countryside". This presumably refers to the period of the Cultural Revolution, when millions of educated people (including musicians) were forcibly sent to the farms. This may also explain why the picture of the countryside presented here is an idealized one.
The pieces is a genuine original for oboe and piano' however in style it represents an interesting mixture of western romantic music and chinese folk music, where the melody instrument would be the di, a type of flute. The slow introduction followed by a series of episodes of gradually increasing speed is typical.
