for trumpet and bassoon

This short work for the unusual pairing of trumpet and bassoon came about because my friends, Jim and Lauren G. Stubbs, of Victoria, British Columbia, complained that they had little to nothing to play as a duo, with the departure of their pianist son for university. I tried to fill their need by writing something which would be interesting for both players. it ended up as both a compositional and also an ensemble challenge, particularly in balancing the two instruments, which is why I finally chose to call it an Etude. Luckily, Jim and Laurie are consummate chamber players who have been performing together for decades, and are able to make the balance work superbly, so I knew it could be done. I'm grateful to them for validating and valuing my work, and am delighted to dedicate it to them.
