ABOUT THE MUSIC
Sonata in C minor for Bassoon and Piano was written in early 2023 and premiered by Dr. Ariel Detwiler at the 2024 International Double Reed Society conference in Flagstaff, AZ. The first movement, Andante con moto, combines a gentle pace with a lively spirit and declamatory statements from the bassoon. The second movement, Teneramente, delves into tender, expressive melodies, and the final movement, Allegro, brings a vibrant and energetic conclusion to the piece.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Matthew Maxam is a cellist, bassoonist, and composer native to St. Paul, Minnesota. He studied biology and music at the University of Minnesota, where he studied cello with Tanya Remenikova. He studies bassoon with Dr. Ariel Detwiler, and performs regularly with several music groups throughout the Twin Cities metro area on both cello and bassoon. Aside from music, Matthew works in the medical device industry and is a master level practitioner and instructor in Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, a Korean martial art. This is his first published work.
