Abaafa Luli
for woodwind quintet
by Justinian Tamusuza (b. 1951) - Ugandan composer

Abaafa Luli is in the Luganda language and means, "They Who Died Then". The first theme was inspired by the Ugandan Martyr's Oratorio, Joseph Kyagambiddwa's musical monument to the 22 nineteenth-century Ugandan Christian converts slaughtered when they refused to renounce their faith. The piece was commissioned by the Richmond Symphony Woodwind Quintet on the occasion of their ten-day tour to Kenya and Tanzania, East Africa, in February, 1994.
