Tableaux del Norte
for unaccompanied oboe
by Ian Davidson - American composer and oboist
ABOUT THE MUSIC
Tableaux del Norte was composed between 2011 and 2013. The work is inspired by the Detroit Industry Murals in the Detroit Institute of the Arts, painted by Diego Rivera between 1932 and 1933.
The murals are spread across four walls with this subsequent composition being divided into four movements, each reflecting a single wall.
In 2011, through the help of Keith and Deb Bellovich, I spent a day alone in the “Rivera Court” improvising with an oboe and capturing musical ideas that would later become this composition. Special thanks to the Bellovich family and the Detroit Institute of the Arts for this extraordinary opportunity. Without this assistance I would not have been able to complete this work.
Tableaux del Norte was premiered at the 2013 IDRS Conference held at University of Redlands in Redlands, California.
