The "Reel and Hornpipe" for wind quintet is a transcription of the last two movements of Mr. Weait's "19th Century Scrapbook" (1971) for wind octet or nonet. The two dances, "Buckley's Favorite Reel" and the "Saratoga Hornpipe" can be found in early 19th Century collections of American dance music. The settings are intended to invoke the jubilant, foot-stomping rhythmical drive of the country fiddlers, banjoists, and wash-tub bassists who played the music.
