Lucy Long (score & parts) - 3BSN/CBSN or 4BSN
for three bassoon and contrabassoon or four bassoons
by Fred Godfrey (1837-1882) - English bandmaster
Arranged for bassoon quartet by David Whitehouse. This piece was written for the bassoonist Philip Langdale, a member of Godfrey's band. It has proved a popular solo for the bassoon ever since and for many years it was the public's only experience of the solo bassoon, reinforcing their concept of the "comedian of the orchestra". It is based on a folk-song from the Southern United States which starts:
Oh I just come out before you
To sing a little song.
I plays it on my banjo,
And I calls it Lucy Long.
This edition incorrectly attributes the composition to Charles Godfrey, Fred's father. The Crooks Anonymous Series: An eminently playable series of works from the repertoire of the renowned Worcestershire based quartet "Crooks Anonymous". Many of these pieces were specially written or arranged for Crooks and range from the serious to the completely unserious! Very few bassoonists will have escaped the clutches of Lucy Long - now 3 bassoonist plus contra can tackle her together.Crooks Anonymous Series #8.
