Rondo Ostinato was written for Kirsten Nelson, the composer's daughter. The various ostinati are buried in the piano part and consist of two note fragments whose pitch and rhythm remain unchanged for long periods of time while the notes around them move forward with a strong sense of direction. This provides an ongoing feeling of tension and release that helps to create the intensity and lyricism of the various parts of the piece.
