Inventions in Swedish Folk Style (2000)
for woodwind quintet
by Stefan Johnsson - Swedish composer

This piece was a finalist at the "Music 2000" Festival in Cincinnati, OH. It was premiered by the italian woodwind quintet, "Quintetto Miro". The piece contains several elements from the tradition of Swedish Folk Music. At the beginning, the French horn presents the theme. This is followed by inventions that feature inversions and retrograde forms. The second section is a harmonic mirroring between the harmonic minor scale and a chord scale rooted in jazz. The third section features polytonality, leading to a more rhythmic section. Further inventions follow, derived from the second part of the opening theme. The major scale is featured here. At the end, the two parts of the theme and the inventions are heard together and finally a horn solo brings the work to its conclusion.
