Sonatina in One Movement

for bassoon and piano

by Drew Banzhoff - American composer

Sonatina in One Movement is a shorter piece that attempts to take a postmodern approach to the Sonatina and/or Sonata form, with musical material suggesting idioms that evoke the fusion of the languages of Igor Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith and other 20th Century composers who wrote in an idiosyncratic neoclassical (or in the case of Hindemith, “new objective”) style. I should note, however, that I have not consciously attempted to recreate the languages of these composers; it just so happens to appear that some traits of my personal compositional language expressed in this piece are shared with those of composers following select 20th Century compositional trends.
