Aria & Quodlibet
for woodwind quintet
by Arne Running (1943-2016) - American composer
1. Aria
2. Quodlibet
If you have 3 minutes to spare, we urge you to listen to the second movement, the Quodlibet, of this exciting new quintet. Audiences laugh out loud when it is performed - perhaps you, too, will find it amusing. This movement makes an excellent encore piece. And young audiences are also quick to appreciate the fun. The Aria movement is warm and lyrical. A chorale in the low winds begins. The chorale is then repeated, with a lyrical oboe melody singing above. The chorale repeats yet again, this time decorated with a lovely melismatic flute solo. A dramatic climax (with a brief tip-of-the-hat to Mahler) is reached, before the bassoon brings the music to a calm closing. The Aria and Quodlibet was performed by the Del'Arte Woodwind Quintet at the 2006 International Double Reed Society (IDRS) conference.
