Klaus-Ur: Three Pieces for Bassoon Solo
for unaccompanied bassoon
by Heinz Holliger (b. 1939) - Swiss oboist, composer, and conductor
    1. Mathematics
    2. Mardter aller Arten
    3. Klaus-Ur
This piece makes use of extended technique. A key is provided with explanations. This already legendary oboist now presents three demanding, yet humorously enigmatic, pieces for the bassoon. The first (″Mathematics″) is not the only piece to require careful calculation, with the second piece (″All Kinds of antics″) recalling Mozart's famous coloratura aria from “The Abduction from the Seraglio”. In the third piece (″Ex-Amateur″), composed for the 2002 ARD music competition, the bassoonist literally has to pass an exam in almost unrealisable playing feats – only suitable for the brave-hearted!
