Welsh Rarebit
for flute and bassoon
by Gwyn Parry-Jones (b. 1946) - Welsh composer
I. March First
II. Daffodil Waltz
III. Ffiwg Ffinale

Welsh Rarebit is a suite for flute and bassoon, and was written for Frances and Chris Nex. It consists of three movements with aptly Welsh titles: March First, Daffodil Waltz, and Ffiwig Ffinale!- in the keys of F and C, a further allusion to the players for whom it was composed. The opening March strays from 4 in a bar now and then, lurching into 7/8 and back out again. In the Waltz, there is some doubt whether Spring has really come, but this is resolved at the very end. The final fugue obeys the rules with subjects, inversion and modulations clear to see, but the decisive chormatic ending has a cheekiness all its won. This Suite was first performed on St. David's Eve, February 29th, 1992 at a Welsh Evening in Cambridge.
