A Memory
for bassoon quartet

by Don Gillis (1912-1978)

Edited by Bruce Gbur. This work was composed while Gillis was at Interlochen, having heard a group of student bassoonists (among whom was John Miller). he employed Impressionistic tehniques with the use of extended chords and parallel movement of perfect fifths, creating a mood of introspection. Gillis planned to publish the work through Interlochen Press, who engraved a score and set of parts for him to proof. He did proofread and correct the piece, but withdrew it when he left the National Music Camp. This authorized edition was prepared from the composer's corrected proofs through the courtesy of Mrs. Barbara Gillis, the composer's widow.
