Sonate, op. 94
for oboe and piano
by Kenichi Nishizawa (b. 1978) - Japanese composer and pianist
I. Moderato flessibile
II. Allegretto
III. Andante moderato

From the composer:

"I like Saint-Saens' Oboe Sonata" declared Ms. Noriko Yoshitake, the chairperson of the Japan Double Reed Inc., during a celebratory toast at a concert afterparty. "So please do compose a sonata for the oboe", she continued. "One that will be performed as often as the one by Saint-Saens". I thought to myself that I would do my best to create such a piece. The demand of creating a piece that would be performed as often as that of Saint-Saens was a challenge. Be that as it may, this is not the reason why this Sonata sounds romantic. As it was the instrument I feel in love with early in life, I wanted the oboe to be capable of making beautiful sounds filled with warmth and elegance. On September 22, 2015, my own oboe sonata was premiered by German oboist Christoph Hartmann and Japanese pianist Kayo Yamaguchi, along with the Saint-Saens, performed on the same concert.
