Low Agenda
for bassoon and double bass
by Gernot Wolfgang (b. 1957) - Austrian composer

From the composer:

A few years ago I decided to write Four chamber music duos that would feature the bassoon in combination with the most common string instruments: violin, viola, cello, and bass. All four pieces are now finished. Low Agenda was written in 2007. The piece is four minutes long and very much influenced by contemporary jazz. A groove is present throughout. Written out soli for the double bass and the bassoon make up the middle section of the composition. Low Agenda's theme is largely orchestrated in octave unisons between the two instruments, as I find this particular sounds very attractive. During the B-section of the theme- as well as during the bassoon solo and a brief section within the coda- the double bass plays a groove predominantly consisting of harmonics. The C-section of the theme is rock-oriented and features bass pizzicato slaps.

Low Agenda is dedicated to bassoonist Judith Farmer and bassist Nico Abondolo. The composition was written in honor of the work of the late saxophone great Michael Brecker, whose musical influence can be heard during the bassoon solo.
