Circle of Memories
for unaccompanied oboe or English horn
by Rosalind Carlson (b. 1937) - Australian composer

Circle of Memories was commissioned by Margaret Burdan, a Melbourne oboist, and composed in 2002. It is an evocative solo for oboe or English horn in which the composer is remembering her husband, who dies in March 2000. In particular, the opening and circling theme expresses her memories of those things they did together and her yearning for him. The theme should be played doloroso, to enhance the reflective and sad mood. This contrasts with the more animated episodes, when Carlson is thinking albeit briefly- of happier times. Both the oboe and English horn are ideally suited to the interpretation of this mood of longing.
