Program notes:

Bassoonicorn is intended as a loving tribute to my dear friend Dr. Eric Varner. In 2018, Eric, myself, Ann Shoemaker of Baylor University, and Sasha Enegren of Montclair State University, formed a professional bassoon quartet which we called, Teacher Band. Teacher Band gave its debut at the 2019 IDRS Convention in Tampa, FL where we premiered several new compositions (including my own Groovin') and some wonderful arrangements. Plans for new compositions and new performances had already begun when we lost our dear friend. Bassoonicorn is intended to capture the playful and good-natured spirit of Eric using the namesake mascot of Trevco-Varner Music, the bassoonicorn, as inspiration. It should always be performed with lightness and attention to not take it too fast.
