SevenEight
for bassoon and piano
by Thomas Muller (b. 1959)- German composer

As the title indicates, this is a partly tricky polymetric composition which combines 7/8 with 8/8/ bars in a way that the listener doesn't immediately notice the "missing" of a beat in certain passages; this is because the permanent change of accent obscures this missing. The mainly ostinato character of the piano accompaniment is broken up for some time by structure creating unison passages and only in the end abolished by the bass note movement of the II-V-I cadence. In the middle section, two bebop cadenzas in the piano part contrast with the otherwise lyrical character of the piece.
