First, to provide an accompaniment for the solo part in case there's no piano to rehearse with. This can be very handy if one wants to accompany a student or a colleague. Second, to offer the possibility to perform this piece as a concert duo similar to Mozart Sonata for bassoon and cello KV 292. Some elements were actually borrowed from this piece. Compared to the original score, the duo version obviously has certain limitations.
