Patrick Harlin, composer
The New York Times writes that Patrick Harlin's “aesthetics capture a sense of tradition and innovation…” and that “Mr. Harlin is breaking new ground.”
Patrick’s music is often rhythmic, propulsive, lyrical, and inspired by nature. His music has been performed by the St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Collegium Cincinnati, Aarhus Post-Orkester, Alarm Will Sound, Rochester Philharmonic, Kansas City Symphony, Calidore String Quartet, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, and many more.
Upcoming premieres include the Art of Flight in May 2017. The 30-minute companion work to Vivaldi's Four Seasons was commissioned by Christ Church Cathedral in collaboration with visual artist Anne Patterson’s yearlong Murmuration art installation. Additional works include a piano concerto for pianist Jeffrey Gilliam, as well as brass quintets for members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and a solo viola work for Brant Bayless, principal violist of the Utah Symphony.
Recent awards include a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Presser Award from the Theodore Presser Foundation, and the premiere Aspen/Hermitage residency prize, and the Rappaport Prize in Composition.
A recent Calgary Herald review notes "Rapture demonstrated both imagination and skill, qualities that are self-recommending. One can only hope for more performances and a bright future for the talented young composer.
