Like the characters of Britten’s work, the characters of Myths can be found in Ovid’s poem \u003cem\u003eMetamorphoses\u003c\/em\u003e, and their tales or personalities are programmatically composed for each movement. \u003cem\u003eEcho\u003c\/em\u003e uses dynamics and imitative counterpoint to emulate the dialogue between Echo and Narcissus. The second movement, \u003cem\u003eTisiphone\u003c\/em\u003e, utilizes extended performance techniques to demonstrate some horrific capabilities of the oboe. The leaps and sudden dynamic shifts portray the madness and terror associated with the character. In \u003cem\u003eCyparissus\u003c\/em\u003e the plaintive beauty of grief is explored through the use of a “crying” motive, which gradually comes to represent a drooping cypress tree. Just as \u003cem\u003eArachne\u003c\/em\u003e is a spinning contest between Arachne and the goddess Minerva, it is also a technical challenge for the performer. The spinning wheel theme is interspersed with Minerva’s screams of outrage to form an energetic finale. The bassoon enters, bouncing down the scale, and then jumping back up the octave. This diatonic theme is contrasted with sections that carry the tonal center far from the original d minor into the A-Flat regions. The contrasting sections bring some dissonance and syncopation against the theme. But, all resolves quickly at the end. This movement is in rondo form.\u003cbr\u003e\"A Moment of Peace\" is established through slowly unfolding chords and lines. After introductory patterns in the strings, the bassoon initiates a melody with the simple, step-wise motif E-F-E-D. The delicacy of this theme is created through mordents, grace notes and other forms of ornamentation. This movement is structured as a theme and variations which rarely stray far from the home tonality, yet cover a wide range of dynamics, tempi, and mood. The expressive high range of the bassoon is explored particularly in the closing section. \u003cbr\u003e\"In Motion\" can best be described as a \"driven rondo-with-cadenza\". The pace of this movement is relentless, with the bassoon as the most active player. A restlessness is felt with the shifting tonal centers of each new statement of the theme. The harmonic structures are sparse, and the style is forceful.
